Painful Grocery Shopping

Since the start of the national economic downturn, grocery shopping has gone from being fun, at least for me, and turned into a painful necessity.  The prices of every single item that I usually shop for have increased drastically and I do not see it ending any time soon.  Two years ago, I used to be able to purchase a bag of spinach for a dollar and some change.  Now, I am spending more than $3.00 for a bag that is slightly smaller than those sold in the past.

Another factor of painful grocery shopping is the smaller portions that food companies are now selling.  Really, how many bowls can one get out of one of the super-skinny cereal boxes today?  Bags of potato chips are now filled to almost half of the bag size, sometimes more.

I went to the grocery store yesterday evening and spent almost $80.00 for only 5 bags of groceries.  I am still trying to figure out where my money went.  Perhaps it is time for me to start traveling 33 miles north just to shop at the Walmart Supercenter.  The money I will be able to save shopping there can be used for the extra gas needed for the trips.
